Racing legend Jeff Gordon will take part in the 99th Indianapolis 500 in his 23rd and final season of racing as pace car driver behind the wheel of a Corvette Z06. The five-time Brickyard champion will kick off the Indy 500 on May 24 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon is very familiar with the legendary track—he won the first NASCAR race in the history of the Speedway, the 1994 Brickyard 400—and has won four more times since. His 2014 win made him the first five-time Brickyard champion and the only driver to win five major races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“Indy is hallowed ground for racers like me and I couldn’t be more thrilled to drive the Corvette Z06 pace car around the track that helped drive my success over the years," Gordon said. This will be the 13th time a Corvette has been the official pace car of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” with Corvettes leading race cars to the green flag more times than any other vehicle.
The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will have no difficulty leading the pack with its 650-horsepower engine, seven-speed manual transmission, and track-capable chassis. The pace car will have an Arctic White exterior and Adrenaline Red interior, and will be decked out with a unique Indy graphics package and safety strobe lights, but will otherwise resemble production models.
